Rocket Languages currently feature courses in Spanish, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Chinese, and American Sign Language.

A relatively new company, Rocket Languages has been making a splash since 2004 because of the affordability of its programs and their focus on what Rocket Languages terms “conversational learning.”

Each program consists of three major components. MegaVocab allows users to select a topic, such as “Travel” or “Money” and then asks the user to select a response that corresponds to a vocabulary term. Especially interesting about MegaVocab is the option to add terms to the standard list of about 1,000 words. MegaAudio works similarly to MegaVocab, but users must match audio phrases to images. The last component, MegaVerbs, requires that users correctly change a verb from one tense to another.

Rocket Languages’ programs are available in CD format but are also downloadable. As with most language software, there is a free trial of Rocket Languages available through their website. This is, of course, the best way to see if the program is right for you. Although the program’s true dedication to cultural diversity is debatable, the fact that Rocket Languages is about a quarter the price of its competition remains a strong selling point.
